Later a Roman oppidum, it was also the site of a Benedictine abbey starting in the 10th century. The town was fortified by the Vikings before serving as a then served as a supply point for Joan of Arc’s troops in the 15th century. The city was badly damaged during World War II, first crossed by the Demarcation Zone between the free zone and the occupied zone, then largely destroyed by bombing.
No matter the season, you can enjoy the vast wooded areas of Sologne, north of the city. They are only a few minutes’ drive away. The 12th century belfry and the ruins of the ramparts attest to the city’s medieval past, while the abbey garden, an Art Deco masterpiece found on a small island between t he Yèvre and the Berry Canal, is a testimony to the local ironworking and ceramic expertise.
