Discover Vierzon and the region

Vierzon has a rich history. It was one of the cities destroyed by Vercingétorix during Caesar’s attack on Bourges. Later a Roman oppidum, it was also the site of a Benedictine abbey starting in the 10th century. The town was fortified by the Vikings before serving as a then served as a supply point for Joan of Arc’s troops in the 15th century. The city was badly damaged during World War II, first crossed by the Demarcation Zone between the free zone and the occupied zone, then largely destroyed by bombing.

No matter the season, you can enjoy the vast wooded areas of Sologne, north of the city. They are only a few minutes’ drive away. You’re sure to be won over by the richness of the forest’s flora and fauna, whether it’s the bellowing of the stag or a fishing break on the shores of a pond. You can also float down the Canal de Berry or rent a “berrycyclette” to ride along the marked routes of Vierzon.

Make sure to take advantage of your stay by visiting the Eglise Notre-Dame de Vierzon, which is home to the shrine of Saint Perpetua, the patron saint of the city. The 12th century belfry and the ruins of the ramparts attest to the city’s medieval past, while the abbey garden, an Art Deco masterpiece found on a small island between t he Yèvre and the Berry Canal, is a testimony to the local ironworking and ceramic expertise.

Just a few kilometres from Bourges, Vierzon benefits from the rich cultural agenda of the Cher prefecture, notably on the occasion of the famous Printemps de Bourges, the music festival that welcomes nationally- and internationally-renowned artists each April. Between May and September, you can also enjoy the Nuits Lumière while strolling through Bourges.
