Founded in the 1st century B.C., Rennes was protected by a single fortified wall built towards the end of the 3rd century, to which two more walls were added in the 15th century. The most common type of construction was originally timber frame houses, until a fire ravaged the city in 1720. During reconstruction, the city modernised itself by trading wood for stone.
In this “City and Land of Art and History” you can discover a rich civil and religious heritage as you wander through the streets of Rennes. The city centre has a large number of churches and market buildings, which today are often home to businesses or art galleries. After a day of visiting, you’ll be ready to lay your head down on a comfortable pillow.
Whether you are in Rennes for a weekend getaway with your family or a business trip, there is always something to see. For an exposition, head to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the contemporary art centre of La Criée or the Palais des Musées. To learn more about Rennes’ heritage, stroll from the impressive city hall to the Pavillons des Lices, from the Grand Séminaire that now houses the university of economic science to the Palais Saint-Georges, and don’t forget the Palais du Parlement, the Tour Duchesne and the Portes Mordelaises.
From an evening at the opera to a play at the Théâtre National de Bretagne, a concert at the legendary Transmusicales de Rennes to a street art festival like Les Tombées de la Nuits or Stunfest (arcade and retro games), you will be spoilt for choice during your stay in Rennes, a city that never says “no” to a chance to party!
