Discover the city of Toulon

Poised between mountain and sea, Toulon nevertheless has its sights firmly set on the water. It has been a port of call across the ages: for the Greek ships of antiquity, for countless merchant ships, for the fleet of Louis XIV after Vauban gifted the city with its imposing fortifications. The harbour has been visited convicts, explorers, and war. The Second World War took a heavy toll on Toulon. The port had to be rebuilt. It plays host today to aircraft carriers, helicopter carriers and nuclear attack submarines, making the city the principal base of the French Navy.

Upper or lower town, the choice is yours! The former, in the Haussmann style, houses the Opera House, built in 1862 and Charles Garnier’s inspiration for the one in Paris. The latter, more lively and popular, seems to be frozen in the medieval era. The Quai de Cronstadt and the harbour are not to be missed. On foot, you can stroll along Toulon’s commercial port, admiring the sailboats and other docked vessels.
