Clovis, the Capitouls and the wave of Catharism defined the first centuries of Toulouse’s existence. But it was later, in the 15th century, that the pink city received its famous nickname: the commercialisation of pastel dye was accompanied by an explosion in the number of coloured brick houses. The 17th century saw the start of construction on the Canal du Midi.
Since the 20th century, the city, overlooked by the Industrial Revolution, has set off on the conquest of space, becoming the chosen spot for the largest aeronautical companies.
The mythical Place du Capitole is the beating heart of the City of Violets, around which the old city stretches out in a draughtboard pattern. That makes it easy to not get lost!
A visit to the Abbey of Saint-Sernin is the perfect opportunity to explore the medieval district, now a stronghold of secondary schools and universities, before setting out across the neighbourhoods separating the heart of the city from the Canal du Midi, taking in the Minimes, Saint-Michel and Matabiau quarters or heading towards the Museum of Old Toulouse.
Whether you’re in Toulouse for a family weekend or for business tourism, the numerous bridges that span the Garonne are so many invitations to cross from one bank of the Pink City to another as you explore the Château de la Reynerie and the Augustinian Convent.
These same bridges will lead you to the Saint-Sernin Basilica, a symbol of medieval Roman Art.
You can then stroll the paths of the Jardin des Plantes or enjoy a coffee across from the Théâtre du Capitole.
Music, film, comedy: there’s a festival to suit everyone’s tastes! Your visit to Toulousemight overlap with Les Siestes Electroniques at the end of June for film, Séquence Court-Métrage between March and April for film or Le Printemps du Rire in the spring for comedy. Toulouse Plages, the Feria Tolosa Toros and the carnival will also leave you with lasting memories.
