History and Town Planning

The castellany of the Abbot of Saint-Denis in the 9th century, Villepinte developed greatly in the Middle Ages, eventually becoming its own parish in the 13th century. The city’s castle, built by a powerful member of the Parisian bourgeoisie, later housed a major sanatorium. In the 20th century, the city saw small residential neighbourhoods spring up, followed by urban zones on former farmlands, dividing the city into different areas without a single city centre.

Where to enjoy a walk

The departmental park of Sausset, between Aulnay-sous-Bois and Villepinte, is a true green lung for northeastern Paris. During your walks or morning jogs, you can discover a multitude of scenic landscapes. If you feel like a boat trip, you can drift down the Ourcq Canal, which winds its away across the Seine-Saint-Denis area. In Paris you can take “the green path”, which crosses the 12th district from the Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes.

The 16th century castle is Villepinte’s main claim to fame. But if you choose to visit the capital, you will be able to admire the countless buildings and bridges that make Paris the most beautiful city in the world. For an overview, climb to the top of the Montmartre Hill or hop aboard a bateau-mouche!

From the Salon du Cheval, Maison et Objet, to Première Vision and SIAL, the Parc des Expositions in Villepinte hosts some of Paris’ largest fairs. In June, during the Festival de Saint-Denis, there are classical music concerts in the famous Gothic basilica, a necropolis for the kings of France. The department also hosts the Festival de Jazz Banlieue Bleue in the springtime, and the Fête de l’Humanité at Parc Georges Valbon de La Courneuve in September.
