The city owes its name to an abbey built during the reign of Clovis in 639 AD. The latter was called Saint-Pierre-des-Fossés which was a reference to the sloping relief up to the Marne river of the future municipality. Later, in 868 AD, the abbey received the relics of Saint-Maur, the patron saint of charcoal makers, boilermakers, and grave diggers. Then, in the 15th century, the city was the meeting place between Jean sans Peur and Isabeau de Bavières who signed the Treaty of Saint-Maur.
