Saint-Nazaire has been inhabited since the neolithic era. It was part of Brittany for a very long time, but separated during the French Revolution. It was a very small, rural, coastal town until the 19th century. It was only during the last few decades before the end of the 19th century that the city experienced regional economic boom.
