The city the Gauls named Nemetocenna experienced significant growth in the Roman period. In the 12th century the city became part of the royal lands and was given the name of Arras. Divided into two by the Crinchon, Arras was developed on both sides of the river. It became famous for its tapestries in the second half of the 14th century. Arras was hit hard during World War I and three quarters of the city were destroyed. It was rebuilt nearly identically to the way it looked before. In terms of architecture, the city has a wide range of styles: from Flamboyant Gothic to Flemish, classical architecture to Art Deco.
Feel like getting some fresh air? Head to the 23 hectare-site of the Grandes Prairies along the Scarpe. You can also take a family trip to the Cité Nature, housed inside a factory that used to produce miner’s lamps, which was renovated by Jean Nouvel. In the springtime, you can stroll through the Jardin des Boves. During your stay you can also partake in numerous relaxing activities in the Val de Scarpe, such as hiking, water sports, ropes courses, fishing and more.
Arras has a rich heritage: as you explore the city, you will come across magnificent Flemish baroque facades and Art Deco buildings that add to the city’s charm. The Belfry, which at 77 metres high towers over the rest of the city, is a UNESCO-listed world heritage site. You can also visit the Boves, limestone quarries that were dug starting in the 10th century. Lovers of religious art won’t want to miss the Abbaye Saint-Vaast and the cathedral. Another must-see site is the Citadelle Vauban, built between 1667 and 1672.
If you only remember one event, it must be the Main Square Festival, which takes place in the citadel of Arras over a 3-day weekend in July. It’s one of France’s largest cultural events, with an international programme. A more family-friendly activity takes place on the Grand'Place each July and August, where an immense beach is installed for the Festival Arras on the Beach. Activities include sporting events, children’s games, beach volleyball, beach football and more. It’s a perfect blend of outdoor sports and a convivial atmosphere. The first week in September, l'Embrasement du Beffroi offers a fairy-tale spectacle.
