Several standing stones bear witness to the settlement of the area way back in prehistoric times. In the middle ages, the city was home to one of the 16 special courts responsible for collecting salt tax in Anjou. Under the Ancien Régime, Cholet took off in a big way with the development of the textile industry. The moist clay-rich soil lend themselves particularly well to linen and hemp cultivation.
Cholet, which is known as “the capital of the handkerchief”, converts to shoe production at the end of the 19th century. From 1950 onwards further industries set up for business there.
The region has some very nice country walk options: you could stroll along the banks of the Bois d'Ouin pools, relax by the Lac de Ribou or Lac du Verdon, take a walk in the Bois de la Cure, in the forest or around the local hedged farmland...
The more sporty types will want to go hiking. Some 300 kilometres of trails extend across the region, around the various lakes and ponds and along the river.
Among the not-to-be-missed sights, L'église du Sacré-Cœur, built in romano-byzantine style, L’église Notre-Dame, built in néo-gothic style, and the so-called Tour du Grenier à Sel, built in the 16th century. Not forgetting the many standing stones, in particular the Menhir de la Garde, which stands at the entrance of the Jardin du Mail (3.6 metres tall, with a circumference of 6.5 metres) and the so-called Pierre Plate standing stone.
Among the many events hosted throughout the year in Cholet, the Cholet carnival, which attracts some 100,000 visitors each year (in February/March), and the Festival des Arlequins, which takes place in the spring, are two of the highlights. In July-August, Cholet dances to the beat of l'Eté Cigale. In November it’s time for ZEClectiques, a major event dedicated to the music of the moment.
