Built between 1389 and 1500, St. Martin’s Church is Landshut’s main church and one of the city’s key landmarks. With its 130.1-metre high tower, the late Gothic church is the tallest brick building in the world and is one of southern Germany’s most important sacred buildings thanks to its size and impressive spatial effect. It is regarded as the main work of architect Hans von Burghausen.
Located at the heart of the historic old town, the imposing town hall consists of three gabled houses connected to one other. On the upper floor of the middle building is the Great Hall, a large ballroom where grand events used to be held. This is where the bridal dance took place during the Landshut Wedding of 1475. A circular painting of the pageant impressively depicts what is probably the most glamorous era in Landshut’s history.
The Landshut Residence consists of two architecturally different buildings. The first one, the "German building", has an early classicism-style facade. The other one, the magnificent “Italian building”, was shaped by Duke Ludwig X, who commissioned Italian architects to build it. It was the first Renaissance-style palace situated north of the Alps. The Landshut Residence contains state rooms with rich stucco work and frescoes.
Built in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I, Trausnitz Castle towers on the Hofberg high above the city centre. The castle courtyard offers visitors many fabulous views of the city. Trausnitz Castle was considered to be the ancestral castle of the Wittelsbach dynasty. In the Middle Ages, it had a key role as the seat of government for the Dukes of Lower Bavaria. The castle has retained many impressive features from different periods of its history.
