Jerez de la Frontera was founded more than 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, although it was later occupied by the Romans and the Arabs. The history and culture of this city in Andalusia make it a benchmark place to visit its important monuments. But beyond that, Jerez is also the cradle of flamenco in Spain, another great attraction for music lovers.
A route through the heart of Jerez
The Alcázar de Jerez is a must stop on our trip. It is an Arab fortress built in the 12th century and located in the upper part of the city. If the outside is spectacular and its robustness and thick walls, which reached up to 4 kilometers in length, attract attention, its interior is even more striking. There we can see the Arab baths, the mosque, the city gate, the parade ground or the Villacencio Palace. All this makes the Alcázar one of the great jewels of this beloved city in Spain.
Continuing our historical walk, a visit to one of its famous churches, that of San Miguel, is also almost mandatory. It was built at the end of the 15th century and stands out for its mix of architectural styles, which are especially striking. Similarly, the 17th-century Jerez Cathedral, built on the old mosque, is another stop on our route. For art lovers, inside you can find the famous painting 'La virgen niña' by Zurbarán. Together with the cathedral, the Basilica de la Merced and the Church of Santo Domingo make up a large monumental complex in the province of Cádiz.
The Plaza del Arenal is also another unique place in Jerez de la Frontera. In the San Miguel neighborhood is this square that stands out for its places to enjoy good traditional wine and its delicious tapas, and of course, its tabancos (traditional taverns). In addition, in the center of the square we find one of the most striking sculptures of Miguel Primo de Rivera on horseback.
But, if something else characterizes Jerez de la Frontera, it is its wineries. The traditional wineries and the Tío Pepe wineries have become a major tourist attraction, especially for wine lovers. Taking a short tour of its vineyards and tasting the characteristic and traditional Jerez wine is a great plan to enjoy a most leisurely day.
In addition to the historic buildings, the flamenco show that the city offers and its famous and old squares, Jerez is surrounded by characteristic towns where we can take advantage of and visit on our trip. Thus, a few minutes by car we find Puerto de Santa María or Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
One of the best accommodation options in Jerez is the B&B Hotel Jerez. It is very close to all points of interest in the city and is ideal for staying on our trip. It has all the comforts at a very affordable price. In fact, it is the best cheap hotel to visit Jerez without having to take the car.
