Mülheim on the Ruhr - a city with a green heart

Mülheim is a big city with all the charm of a village The homes of earlier industrialists, a quaint Old Town with half-timbered houses and traditional inns, as well as memorials to its industrial pioneers give this city its unique character. A series of green spaces along the Ruhr offer endless opportunities for recreation - about 50% of the city is occupied by parks and gardens. By the way: Mülheim is the only city in the Ruhr district, which the river actually runs right through.

Camera Obscura / Museum of the Pre-History of Film

Don’t miss a visit to the world's largest walk-in camera obscura during your stay in Mülheim. The camera obscura was installed in the dome of the old Broicher Water Tower in 1992, to celebrate the State Garden Show. Since 2006, the Museum of the Pre-History of Film has been housed in the lower floors of the 25.5-metre-high tower. Here you can explore the development from stills to the moving image through 16 themed areas, and take a journey through the world of visual perception and optical illusion.

Aquarius Water Museum

A museum visit not just for a rainy day! The over-100-year-old listed Water Tower, in which the water museum is housed, impresses from the outside with its unusual side entrance. The multimedia exhibition extends over 14 levels inside the tower and comprises 30 installations showing everything worth knowing about the element of water in a modern way. The installations are fun for adults and kids alike. Start the tour with a lift ride up to the top floor. From here, you’ll get to enjoy an amazing view over the Ruhr Valley, over Mülheim to Duisburg and Oberhausen.

Historisches Museum im Schloss Broich

Historic Museum in Broich Castle

Broich Castle is located in the city district of Broich, on the west bank of the Ruhr, close to Mülheim’s centre. Originally built as a weir, then destroyed, rebuilt and rebuilt several times over the centuries, the fortress only became a residence in 1648. The castle’s current appearance is a result of structural changes in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the high part of the castle, you can visit the history museum, home to around 300 objects, models, excavation pieces and more, offering an insight into several centuries of Mülheim history.
