The spot steeped in history where the Rhine and Moselle meet is the city’s landmark. In 1888 Kaiser Wilhelm II, the grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm I, commissioned a monument fit to honour his grandfather, who was the father of Germany’s unification For this to happen, the former harbour of refuge at the mouth of the Moselle river was filled in to make way for the impressive monument. These days it’s a replica that stands in place of the original monument, because the latter was destroyed right down to the plinth in World War Two.

Whatever you do, don’t miss out on the fantastic view of Koblenz and of the German Corner confluence that you get from the fortress! The building that was to become Europe’s second-largest fortress, which is well preserved to this day, was originally commissioned by the Conradine Ehrenbert back in the year 1000. It took on its current appearance between 1817 and 1828. These days, not only can you see a number of archaeological digs at the fortress, it’s also home to the Koblenz State Museum and continually stages special exhibitions for its visitors.

Not far from the German Corner, you can’t miss the tall spires of St. Castor’s Church. The city’s oldest church was built back in 817, and some of its original parts have been preserved to this day. It’s also worth knowing that the church was the scene of some important historical events: The Treaty of Verdun, which divided the Carolingian Empire into three kingdoms, was prepared there. Verdun was just the place where the resulting document was signed. In 1992, to mark the city’s 2,000th birthday, another honour was bestowed upon the church. It was named a Basilica Minor, or Pope’s Church. Barely any other churches outside of Rome have been granted the title.

You should definitely take the time for a nice walk through Koblenz Old Town - it’s well worth it! It’s all about historic buildings, narrow alleyways, pretty courtyards with little boutiques and antique shops. Make yourself comfortable in one of the cafés and soak up the atmosphere created by the grand old facades. Top tip: You’ll find something hidden away in Mehlgasse: the “Pfefferminzje” café, named after a 20th-century woman who made peppermints for a living. In summer you can sit on the pleasant terrace, while in winter the café’s homely atmosphere beckons you inside.

When the weather is fine, you should definitely go for a stroll along the Rhine Promenade. The Promenade was among the areas renovated for the Federal Garden Show 2011, which are still benefitting the city and its visitors. During your walk you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Rhine, as you walk the path lined with lots of flowerbeds. From time to time you can also relax on one of the benches and watch the ships go by on the Rhine.
