Discovering excursion destinations in Giessen

With its ideal location in the middle of Germany, the dreamlike city of Giessen is easy to reach. Education is particularly important here, as Giessen is not only home to countless museums, but also one of Germany's most important universities: the Justus Liebig University Giessen. With a population of around 90,000, Giessen is not a large city, but a trip there is nevertheless exciting. Giessen's diverse offerings and sights offer great variety! The B&B Hotel Gießen-City or B&B Hotel Gießen-Linden are the ideal accommodations for your Gießen holiday. From here, you can easily reach the city centre and also explore the surrounding area in the best possible way.

Experience Giessen attractions: The Mathematikum

There is a highlight for young and old in the heart of the city: the Mathematikum Gießen. As the world's first hands-on museum, it aims to bring people closer to mathematics in an interactive way. The Mathematikum assumes no prior knowledge and is therefore also perfect for visiting with children. The "Mini-Mathematikum" has been specially set up for small children, which can be visited from the age of four. In addition to the permanent exhibition, which includes a giant marble run, there are changing special exhibitions. Discounted tickets for families cost a total of 20 euros.

The boards that mean the world: At the Stadttheater Giessen

The Stadttheater Giessen is less than a quarter of an hour's walk from the Mathematikum. The impressive building is located in the city centre of Giessen and is one of the most important sights in Giessen. The Stadttheater Giessen stages all kinds of performances from operas and musicals to modern dance theatre. The Stadttheater box office is located in the former Dürerhaus Kühn in the city centre, but you can also book your tickets online. Discounts are available for schoolchildren, students, trainees, severely disabled persons and groups of 20 or more. H2: Excursion destinations around Giessen: The Kletterwald Giessen and laser tag

Giessen sights are also available outside the city, only 15 minutes by car from the city centre. That's where you'll find the Kletterwald Giessen. Here, from February to November, you can prove your skills in the treetops on sections of varying difficulty. If you just want to watch, admission is free and you can make yourself comfortable on the specially designed visitors' terrace. For refreshments after the climbing forest, we recommend the restaurant at Schiffenberg Monastery, which is only a two-minute walk away. The monastery is one of the sights you don't want to miss!

If the weather doesn't cooperate, there are also indoor activities to get active. A visit to "Legendary Lasertag" Giessen, which is a 20-minute walk from Justus Liebig University and five minutes by car, is ideal for this. But the bouldering hall in Giessen at the climbing centre also offers an attractive alternative in the north-east of the city.

Giessen - a city shaped by Justus Liebig

Science in particular plays a major role here. In addition to the Mathematikum, there are other scientific Giessen sights, for example the Liebig Museum Giessen.Named after the chemist Justus von Liebig, who is also the patron saint of the University of Giessen, the Liebig Museum houses his former laboratory. He worked in this laboratory from 1824 to 1852, which is now one of the ten most important museums for the history of chemistry. Fortunately, the laboratory is still well preserved, so you feel like you're taking a trip back in time.Admission costs seven euros, ten euros with a guided tour. The family ticket is available at a reduced price of 15 euros. Students, schoolchildren, trainees and people with disabilities also get a discount.

Sights of Giessen: Science and Sport

The discoverer of X-rays, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, also influenced the city. For it was at the University of Giessen that Röntgen, who is buried in Giessen's Old Cemetery, received his first full professorship. The impressive Giessen Botanical Garden is part of the university where Röntgen had his professorship and is only a ten-minute walk from the Old Cemetery. In addition to science, the city has also made a name for itself in another domain in recent years: basketball. For the Giessen 46ers were the only team to play in the first division without interruption for over 45 years. Their home stadium is the Giessen-Ost sports hall. If the Giessen 46ers ever have a home game, it's worth buying tickets. The atmosphere is rousing!
