Marseille is a great city for travellers wanting to discover the South of France while staying in a large city with many activities suitable for couples, friends and families.

Things to do in Marseille

No visit is complete without admiring the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde overlooking the city centre with its incredible panorama and statue of the Holy Mother, the monument in Marseille, or the Cathédrale de la Major close to Marseille’ Vieux Port (Old Port), built in a very individual neo-Byzantine style. The abbey of Saint-Victor, the Château du Frioul and the Musée du Santon are all worth a visit too, even if you’re in Marseille on business.

There are events in Marseille every day, but if you only have time for three, don’t miss the International Festival of Contemporary Music (April), the Monte-Cristo Challenge (June) and the Festival Marsatac (September). Also not to be missed is the Christmas period when traditional santons are used to decorate all the city’s churches.

Leaving the city for the day is also worth it as there are also plenty of things to do around Marseille.
