The Völkerschlachtdenkmals Monument was built to commemorate the first mass battle in human history. Here Napoleon's army fought against the alliance from Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden and had to surrender. A hundred years later the monument was built. The central hall of the monument is divided into 3 levels. The first floor contains a crypt to commemorate the fallen soldiers, the second contains a memorial hall, while the third floor features the dome. A font was created in front of the memorial to commemorate the tears shed by the people. At 91 metres high, you can enjoy an amazing view.

Nikolaikirche Church isn’t a cathedral or court church for a bishop or a sovereign, but it is a church for the people of Leipzig. Today, the city- and parish church of St. Nikolai is known far beyond Germany thanks to its peace prayers that were introduced during the “peace decade”. The church also offers a lot architecturally. The church, with its picturesque vaults and columns, the interior with its bright colours, floral decorations and the palm-like columns, captivates its visitors.
St. Alexej Gedächtniskirche Church is a Russian-Orthodox church in Leipzig, close to the Völkerschlachtdenkmals Monument. It was built to commemorate the thousand soldiers who died during the Battle of Nations near Leipzig. The church was built in Novgorod style and consists of a “winter” and an “upper” church. The 55-metre-high tower is an impressive religious building, topped with a gilded “onion” dome, which dominates the Leipzig skyline.
Augustusplatz is one of the biggest inner-city squares in Europe. After being destroyed in World War 2, the square wasn’t completely rebuilt. It wasn’t until a few years later that a new design was created. The square is now home to an opera house, the university, the Gewandhaus Concert Hall and the Mendebrunnen Fountains. In the autumn of 1989, the central spot was the site of the so-called Monday Demonstrations, which contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since then, the square has become a symbol of freedom, democracy and unity in Germany. Today, the square serves as a central space for events in the midst of central Leipzig.
