The best way to see Barcelona's main attractions is to visit the city centre. First, walk from your Barcelona hotel to La Rambla, the tree-lined avenue that stretches from the beach to the Plaza de Cataluña. You will pass the Boquería market, a picturesque market with delicious food, and the charming Plaza Real with its modern cafes surrounded by palm trees. Not far from La Rambla you will find the Barrio Gótico, in Catalan Barri Gòtic, in the heart of the city with its gargoyle-filled cathedral, the History Museum of Barcelona and the Picasso Museum, a collection of five historic mansions housing more than 3,500 works by the master painter.

On the other side of La Rambla you find El Raval, which has become the city's bohemian and trendy district. This is where the MACBA or Museum of Modern Art of Barcelona is located. The district of La Ribera, Barcelona's medieval quarter, is also within walking distance and is characterised by its tapas bars, fashion shops and the Basilica of Santa María del Mar.

If you visit Barcelona and only have time to see one thing, let it be the Sagrada Familia, the magnificent and famous cathedral. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, the most famous Spanish architect, this work is still under construction after more than a century. Once completed, it will have 12 bell towers, the tallest of which will rise above those currently built. Although it is not yet completed, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Spain, one more reason to book your hotel in Barcelona!

The two main facades, the Passion Facade and the Nativity Facade, were decorated with ornamental details, using real people as models. The main facade, the Gloria facade, is currently under construction. If you still have time, you can visit the exclusive district of Sarrià Sant Gervasi Park Güell (also by Gaudí) in the Gracia district or the Olympic Village in Poble Nou. Last but by no means least, you should definitely try some of the typical dishes of Catalan cuisine during your trip through Catalonia, which are mainly based on seafood and meat. The old town (Ciutat Vella) and the Eixample district are ideal for food tours. After exploring the city, you deserve a break in the sun: Head for the beach of Barceloneta if you're looking for an urban beach, or Bogatell or Ocata if you prefer something quieter.
