History and urbanism

Saint-Malo was founded in the12th century. Damaged by fire in 1661, its architecture testifies to the vast scale of the works undertaken by Vauban and Garangeau to extend and transform the town. Sailors and traders also made a great contribution to the town’s prosperity and influence, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their mark can still be seen on some buildings. Destroyed in the Second World War, the port has been restored to its former splendour.

For a stroll with great views, head for the walls that completely encircle Saint-Malo, providing unbeatable views over "Corsaire city". Next, head into the old town, in the footsteps of French writer Châteaubriand, who spent his childhood at n°2 in the square that bears his name. Admire the stained glass of the Saint-Vincent Cathedral before returning to the hotel via the ship owners’ district.

Passing through Saint-Malo on a family weekend or on business tourism, there’s no shortage of museums and places to visit. The rocks carved by Abbot Fouré, the national fort, built by Vauban and Garangeau, the Petit Bé fort and the Mémorial 39/45 are unmissable, complemented by a tour of the WWII and town history museums.

Saint-Malo has put together a top-of-the-range programme for your visit! It all starts in January with the Sainte-Ouine, a fair at the foot of the city walls, followed by the winter and summer versions of legendary festival La Route du Rock. In April there’s the boat show “Saint-Malo à la Hune”, followed in May by the Etonnants Voyageurs International Film & Book Festival. On 9th July, watch the Tour de France ride into town. And don’t forget the Route du Rhum and Quebec-Saint-Malo Transatlantic sailing races that come round every 4 years.
