Hospitality, at its core, is a human art. It involves warmth, welcome, intuition, and subtle forms of care that no algorithm can ever replicate. The smile at the front desk, the small talk over breakfast, the local recommendations offered with a personal flourish—these are not trivialities. They are threads in the social fabric that binds us. In removing them, we do not merely “streamline” a service; we sterilise it. This is not hospitality; it is habitation. A sterile pitstop in the great transit lounge of late-stage capitalism. You sleep, you pay, you leave. No fuss, no messy human entanglements. And make no mistake: this is not an isolated phenomenon. The unmanned hotel is but a prototype for a society in which the human being becomes the final glitch to be ironed out. One day, even you, the guest, may be deemed unnecessary. Why should rooms be wasted on unpredictable, sweaty mammals when AI-generated avatars can occupy them at 100% efficiency in the Metaverse? So sleep well, if you can. And as you lie there in your code-assigned capsule, serenaded by the gentle whirring of the aircon and the watchful eye of the ceiling cameras, remember: You are not alone. There are no humans here. Just the future. And it’s checking you in.
