The name Monza immediately conjures images of racing cars. The city's racetrack, in fact, has hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix and numerous other world-renowned competitions since 1922. Its location within the Royal Villa Park makes it a unique circuit in the world.
The Royal Villa of Monza, built at the end of the 18th century, has the characteristic U-shape of villas from that era. Modernized in the early 20th century at the behest of King Umberto I, who used it as a summer residence, it was closed after his assassination. The villa's gardens, located within Monza Park, are a valuable landscape and monumental heritage. Among grottoes, small lakes, and waterfalls, you can admire impressive centuries-old plants; the rose garden, established in 1964, is particularly beautiful.
The Park was established in 1805 as an agricultural estate and hunting reserve by Napoleon and is the largest enclosed green area in Europe. The strip along the Lambro River features three mills with their structures still intact, to be observed while walking, cycling, or horseback riding. The Park, in fact, has numerous equipped paths and points where you can rent vehicles and animals. Furthermore, within the park there is a library, some villas, and sports facilities of various types.
Among the things to see in Monza is the Duomo, located in the city center. Inside, you'll find the Chapel dedicated to the Lombard Queen Theodelinda, which houses the Iron Crown, one of Christianity's most important works, used for the coronation of Charlemagne and Napoleon. Also very interesting is the Duomo Treasury Museum, a unique collection of artworks and relics. Near the Duomo are the Arengario with a beautiful portico and the hall with a balcony, now an exhibition venue, the Church of Santa Maria in Strada, and the Ponte dei Leoni (Lions' Bridge), built in the mid-19th century on the remains of a Roman bridge, with its characteristic balcony houses.
The Brianza area hosts some characteristic villages like Vimercate, where the interesting Museo del Territorio is located, and Lissone, home to the Museum of Contemporary Art.
