What to see in Genoa: the most beautiful places to visit

Genoa stretches along the coast of Liguria and into the hinterland, offering many places for everyone to visit. The staff at the B&B hotel, ideally located for visiting Genoa's old and modern city, can suggest many itineraries so you don't miss the most important attractions and the places to enjoy typical cuisine. If you're preparing your itinerary, our tips on what to see in Genoa will be useful.

What are the 10 absolute must-see things in Genoa?

  • Porto Antico: this area of Genoa actually contains many attractions, including the Aquarium, the Bigo (panoramic lift from which you can also see the Lanterna, symbol of the city), the Galata Sea Museum, and the Città dei Bambini. From the piers, boats depart that allow you to view the city from the sea or reach Portofino, San Fruttuoso, the Cinque Terre, and Portovenere.
  • Historic center: it is the largest in Europe, it mirrors the medieval city and, in the maze of “carruggi” (alleys), it hosts numerous palaces, churches, votive shrines, and ancient portals. After walking under the Sottoripa arcades, here is Via San Lorenzo with its characteristic black and white striped Cathedral.
  • Piazza De Ferrari: it is the city's main square, embellished by the fountain and Palazzo Ducale, home to important temporary exhibitions. A short distance away is Christopher Columbus's house.
  • Palazzi dei Rolli: these are ancient buildings where, at the time of the Republic of Genoa, visiting heads of state were received. A UNESCO Heritage site, they currently house Museums (like Palazzo Spinola) and institutions. Via Garibaldi, in particular, hosts among others Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Rosso, and Palazzo Tursi.
  • Spianata Castelletto: reachable by elevator, it is a true terrace overlooking the city.
  • Boccadasse: a small fishing village, at the end of the beautiful seaside walk on Corso Italia, it still retains its ancient charm.
  • Nervi: a district in the eastern part of the city, in addition to its beautiful promenade, it has wonderful parks that hosted Euroflora and very interesting museums.
  • Pegli: located in the western part of the city, it is home to the beautiful Villa Pallavicini Park and the Ligurian Archaeological Museum.

What to eat and where to stay in Genoa?

Genoese cuisine is made of humble ingredients that give life to exquisite dishes. You can't visit Genoa without tasting focaccia, farinata, or “friscieu” (fritters, plain or cod-based) and, naturally, trenette or trofie with pesto. Other typical dishes include stuffed vegetables, fried anchovies, ravioli with meat sauce, cima, cappon magro, and stoccafisso accomodato (stewed stockfish). The city offers many accommodation solutions, but the best remains the B&B HOTEL Genova Principe, which, being close to Principe Station and thus perfect for visiting Genoa and its surroundings, has rooms with all comforts at affordable prices.
