From the hotel to Gewandhaus

The Gewandhaus is just a few minutes' walk from the B&B HOTEL. The route takes you through a traffic-calmed zone, so you can enjoy a relaxed stroll. You stroll south along Nikolaistraße, past the Nikolaikirche, one of the most important churches in the city, which became famous above all for the Monday demonstrations during the reunification period.

Of course, you can also take a detour to the Naschmarkt and the Alte Börse to the west of the Nikolaikirche and explore the beautiful alleyways of the old town. Otherwise, take Grimmaische Straße to an open square, Augustusplatz. From here, you can see the MDR Kubus or Panorama Tower on the right and the modern Gewandhaus on the left.

Tip: The tower is a must for photo enthusiasts. A fast elevator takes you up to the 29th floor to the viewing platform, where you are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.

Interesting facts about the Gewandhaus

The Gewandhaus in the center of Leipzig can look back on a long and proud history that began with its opening in 1781. However, the Gewandhaus at that time was in a different location. The current building on Augustusplatz was opened in 1981 and is known for its excellent acoustics.

The popular Gewandhaus Orchestra is known far beyond the borders of Saxony, as it is one of the oldest and most renowned orchestras in the world. Symphony concerts, chamber music and organ recitals are regularly performed here. Famous conductors such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Kurt Masur have conducted the orchestra.

The program includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and many other great composers, as well as contemporary pieces and world premieres.    The Konzerthaus organizes around 250 classical concerts per season, including the renowned Mendelssohn Festival.

Sights around the Gewandhaus

If you still have time before or after your visit to the Gewandhaus, you should take the opportunity to explore the surrounding area. There is a lot to discover around the concert hall: directly opposite, across Augustusplatz, is the Leipzig Opera House, which is also worth a visit.

Augustusplatz is surrounded by impressive buildings such as the futuristic Paulinum university building, the Aula and the University Church of St. Pauli with its stone and glass façade. The tower-like building on Goethestrasse houses the Egyptian Museum. You should also visit the city skyscraper, the Panorama Tower, and enjoy the view from the 29th floor. You can even dine at lofty heights in the Panorama Restaurant.

If you want to experience even more culture, visit the nearby Museum of Fine Arts or stroll through the Mädler Passage, one of Leipzig's most beautiful shopping arcades. Here you will also find the world-famous Auerbachs Keller. Tip: If you want to stop off here, you should make a reservation in advance, as the seats are very popular.

Other must-see attractions include the Völkerschlachtdenkmal monument commemorating the Battle of the Nations in 1813 (11 minutes away by car), the Panometer - a 360° exhibition by artist Yadegar Asisi (10 minutes away by car) or the Zoological Garden with its 850 different animal species in six fascinating adventure worlds (6 minutes away by car).
