A 54 metre high tower stands at the centre of the magnificent town hall, and its bells can be heard twice a day, in the afternoon and again in the early evening. The original facade is decorated with sandstone figures, showcasing the traditional craftsmen. The figures depicted include a miner, an ironworker, a farmer, a brewer, a merchant and a tanner. The figure of St. George and the Dragon represents the battle between good and evil. The interior of the ballroom is particularly worth seeing. More than 1,000 marriage ceremonies are held here each year.

The Ludwigskirche is a symbol of the city of Saarbrücken. Alongside Dresden’s Frauenkirche and Hamburg’s Michel, it counts among Germany’s most important Baroque churches. The Balustrade of the church, built in the shape of a Greek cross, is decorated with 28 figurative representations of the apostles, prophets and other biblical figures. The church’s interior impresses with its ornate decorations and unique arrangement of altar, pulpit and organ.

The Saar crane, located below the Wilhelm-Heinrich bridge, offers a testament to Saarbrücken’s thriving commercial past. It is a reconstruction of the Baroque harbour crane, built by the Kranen-Gesellschaft in 1761 according to plans designed by Stengel. The crane was used to transfer goods from ships to wagons and carts, and its replica attracts fascinated looks from passers-by to this day.

Alongside the State Theatre on Schillerplatz, the neighbouring Alte Feuerwache, Congresshalle and the sparte4 are also used as theatrical venues. Whether plays, concerts or operatic performances, the Saarländische State Theatre offers a wide and colourful schedule of performances. Numerous other events are also held here, including dance workshops led by dancers from the ballet troupe, as well as readings and lectures.

The Staden is a popular meeting point on the Saar. On sunny days, the meadows are crowded with sun-worshippers, while cyclists and walkers dot the surrounding pathways. Families with children make the most of the playgrounds and recreational opportunities on the banks of the Saar. In the Ulanen Pavillon, you can enjoy a beer and a tasty snack from the grill in the spacious Beer Garden.

Downstream along the Saar, the Saarbrücker Bürgerpark is located beyond the west clasp. Created from a wasteland in a former port area, this district has become a parkland with various uses. For example, there is a boules court, skating area and various grassy meadows for relaxing and sunbathing. Highlights in the park include a former railway track, a chestnut grove with a small ampitheatre, an antique water gate and a large rounded area, which serves as an Open Air stage in the summer. Walkways and small footpaths meander around the parkland, creating opportunities to explore the Bürgerpark.

Experience the heart of Saarbrücken life! With its numerous boutiques, pubs, bistros and restaurants, the St. Johanner market is the lively centrepiece of the city. The market square’s restaurants, pubs and bistros are popular meeting places, and the market is an ideal spot to pause for a break after a stroll around the picturesque laneways nearby, and to admire the shop windows. From the Baroque fountain on the market, there is a direct view of the overlooking castle. Previously, there was also a view of the Ludwigkirche, and from there, back across to the castle. These three lines of sight formed what was known as the so-called ‘Stengel triangle.’
