San Sebastián, a town on the Basque coast of the Bay of Biscay

San Sebastián, or Donostia as it’s known locally, is a town on the Basque coast of the Bay of Biscay. It’s famous throughout Spain as a destination for fine dining, while its popular beaches offer relaxation and fun in the sun. Your hotel in San Sebastián is also a great jumping-off point for the many picturesque destinations along the Basque coast.

A fine dining destination

With restaurants boasting a combined 17 Michelin stars, including three of Spain’s seven three-star restaurants, San Sebastián has one of the highest concentrations of fine dining anywhere in the world. Basque cuisine is a delight for foodies from around the world, with its combination of fresh Atlantic fish with vegetables, beef and lamb from the mountainous interior.
San Sebastián gourmet fare is found in pintxo (tapas) restaurants, which abound here. The nueva cocina vasca (new Basque cuisine) offers new takes on local specialties, including seafood like bacalao al pil-pil, a slow-cooked cod dish, or txuleta, melt-in-your-mouth ox steaks. Fish stews and soups are common fare, while even eels often grace the menu.

Serious beaches right by your San Sebastián hotel

If the image of a sunny European city with a beachfront promenade and thousands of bon vivants taking in the rays is your idea of a good time, San Sebastián is the place for you. The two city beaches offer the ideal urban beach experience so that you never have to stray too far from your San Sebastián hotel – or the pintxo restaurants and bars!
The city has three main beaches: the Playa de la Concha, with a festive, congenial beach environment, and the somewhat smaller Playa de Ondarreta in the posh district known as the millionaires’ belt. Across the river, the Playa de Gros, or Zurriola, is a good alternative for those seeking a more relaxed environment: this is the surfers’ haunt, with fewer tourists and rougher waves.

A gateway to the Basque coast

While you’re staying at your hotel in San Sebastián, you’ll want to take advantage of your stay to explore the Basque coast. Leave the busy beaches for a day to check out Pasaia and Hondarribia, both a short bus ride from San Sebastián. Pasaia can even be reached on foot over a coastal path, and when you get there you can see the town’s lighthouse or climb the Jaizkibel mountain, with panoramic views of the area. On the other side of the mountain is Hondarribia, with its charming old quarter, marina and beach.
If you’ve read this far, we’re sure your stomach is rumbling already with thoughts of Basque cuisine! Go ahead, book your hotel in San Sebastián today with B&B HOTELS!
