Oviedo ,nonetheless boasts a rich cultural and archaeological history

Oviedo is a small yet bustling city in the Asturian highlands. Primarily an industrial and student town, Oviedo nonetheless boasts a rich cultural and archaeological history, with several churches that are over 1,000 years old, along with regional culinary delights. Your hotel in Oviedo is the key to discovering this Asturian wonder.

History and culture in Oviedo

More than a millennium ago, Oviedo was the seat of the Kingdom of Asturia, which remained independent from the largely Muslim rest of Spain. As a result, the area is home to a unique array of pre-Romanesque religious architecture, some of which dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

The Cathedral of San Salvador boasts a 9th century inner sanctum and was built outwards between the 13th and 18th centuries. To the north of the city, the Church of Santa María del Naranco showcases a beautifully preserved thousand-year-old construction and is situated on the side of a mountain that offers panoramic views of the city – each of these sights an additional reason to book a hotel in Oviedo.

If you want to learn more about the history and culture of this sublime city, head over to the Museo Arqueológico de Asturias, which tells the story of the city’s progression from a fortified settlement in Roman time through to its unique medieval heritage and architecture. The Museo de Bellas Artes cannot be missed, filling up two stately palaces in the city centre with works by Spanish and European greats, including a recent extension boasting pieces by Picasso and Dalí.

Book a hotel in Oviedo and discover a local culinary tradition

While Oviedo, like much of Spain, does have its vineyards, many of which are quite famous, the true local passion is sidra, or apple cider. Made from over 30 different varieties of apples, the tart, musty beverage is enjoyed across Spain. Local restaurants called sidrerías, or cider houses, offer the local brew paired with local cuisine on rotating menus that change daily – just another reason to venture beyond your Oviedo hotel.

A student town, Oviedo can be a lively place over the weekends, with no shortage of bars serving the famous cider alongside wine, craft beer and live music. The Fiestas de San Mateo, in late September, are an ideal time to visit, with concerts and parades through the city punctuated by fireworks. The city also hosts numerous sporting events, from ice hockey to mountain biking to bowls, where you can enjoy a festive atmosphere and experience local hospitality.

Oviedo is an ideal place to relax, see the sights and enjoy something that’s a little different from the typical Spanish holiday. Book your hotel in Oviedo today with B&B hotels!
