What to see in Trieste: places and attractions to discover

Trieste is a cosmopolitan city, steeped in Habsburg splendor and the linguistic and religious intersections that have characterized the history of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The B&B Hotel advises you on what to see in Trieste so you don't miss any of the beauties and monuments linked to the city's Mediterranean and Central European soul.

What are the points of interest to visit in Trieste?

  • Piazza Unità d’Italia: the most beautiful of Trieste's squares (the largest on the sea in Europe, with the Molo Audace over 200 meters long) is home to the palaces that bear witness to the city's history (among others, Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, Palazzo Mondello, and Palazzo del Governo).
  • Palazzo del Comune (City Hall): its monumental facade and the bells that Mantua gifted to Trieste at the end of the Great War are interesting.
  • Castello di San Giusto: located on the hill, in the “old city” area, it is an excellent panoramic point over the gulf. It is a fortress commissioned by the Habsburgs and houses two of Trieste's civic museums.
  • Cattedrale di San Giusto: born from the union of two ancient pre-existing churches, it has five imposing naves and ancient and modern mosaic decorations.
  • Chiesa di San Nicolò: Greek Orthodox, it is an example of the peaceful coexistence of different religions within the city.
  • Risiera di San Sabba: the rice husking plant was used by the Nazis both as a prison and sorting camp, and as a place of execution and cremation. Currently, it is a museum intended to commemorate that sad and dark historical period.
  • Castello Miramare: a symbol of Trieste, the residence commissioned by Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg preserves its original furnishings and, thanks to its splendid location and magnificent park that completes it, it is a building not to be missed.
  • In the surroundings of the city, there are other interesting attractions, such as Duino Castle.
  • Trieste is also perfect for a beach weekend, with beaches that dot the promenade, from Miramare to Muggia, the village that preserves traces of Venetian rule.

What to eat and where to stay in Trieste?

Triestine cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean and Dalmatian flavors. Pasta seasoned with fish and shellfish, sardines in saor, and stockfish are joined by goulash, cevapici (meatballs), and meats seasoned with horseradish sauce. The true gem of Trieste, however, is coffee. The historic cafes, once frequented by Joyce, Svevo, and Saba, retain their charm and offer many types of coffee.

If you are preparing your stay in the Friulian capital and are looking for where to stay, discover our hotel in Trieste, perfect for visiting the city, because it's very close to the center and public transport stops.
