The first stop on a visit to the city of Pisa is certainly Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the buildings that represent the stages of a man's life: the Baptistery (birth), the Duomo (life), and the Camposanto (death).
The Tower of Pisa, symbol of the city, is the bell tower of the Duomo.
The Cathedral, in Pisan Romanesque style, began to be built in the era when Pisa was one of the Maritime Republics and houses a splendid mosaic by Cimabue, Giovanni Pisano's Pulpit, and other important artistic works. The Baptistery is the largest in Italy and is a work by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. The Camposanto, built around earth from the place where Jesus was crucified, contains numerous works by important artists. The Tower of Pisa is famous due to the ground subsidence that led to its inclination.
A few minutes from the leaning tower is the Palazzo dell’Orologio, inside which is the Tower of Count Ugolino, also known as the tower of hunger, where the Count and his sons were imprisoned and destined to die of starvation. The Palazzo della Carovana was built by Giorgio Vasari on the site of the former Palazzo degli Anziani. Its facade, with its graffiti, busts, and coats of arms, is imposing and beautiful.
Pisa has two other Leaning Towers: the bell tower of the Church of San Nicola and that of the Church of San Michele degli Scalzi. Borgo Stretto is one of Pisa's most famous districts, an area for walking under medieval porticoes and where you can observe some Romanesque-style churches and the 18th-century Casino dei Nobili. It is located just off the Lungarni.
Pisan Lungarni have inspired artists and poets over the centuries. Today, they allow one to admire important buildings and visit some museums. They are all very beautiful, but the most famous is the Mediceo, from Ponte della Fortezza to Ponte di Mezzo, with the Palazzo dei Medici, the Church of San Matteo in Soarta, and Palazzo Toscanelli.
A walk along the Lungarni is a romantic experience, especially at sunset and in the evening, with the lights reflecting in the water and the bars and trattorias where you can enjoy a tasty dinner. Beyond the Lungarni, it's worth visiting the back of the Church of Sant’Antonio, with one of Keith Haring's last works, the beautiful mural “Tuttomondo,” which is part of the long list of things to visit in Pisa.
