Live the granata myth at Turin's Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino

With a capacity of just over 28,000 seats, the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, formerly Stadio Comunale Vittorio Pozzo, is the official stadium of Toro: the beating heart of Granata fandom. The name is dedicated to the historic team that was a victim of the dramatic Superga tragedy of 1949: one of the strongest teams ever to have graced a football pitch. It currently falls under UEFA Category 4, making it one of the stadiums with the highest technical level in Europe. The natural grass pitch measures 105 x 68 meters. It hosts the matches of Torino FC in Serie A.

How to reach the Stadio Olimpico of Turin

The stadium is located south of the urban center, at Corso Sebastopoli 115 or Via Filadelfia 96/b (access to the central stand), at the end of the city park of Piazza d’Armi and is adjacent to PalaIsozaki, the indoor sports arena that also hosts the ATP Finals of tennis.

Like any sports facility, the access points are those of the two curves (Primavera and Maratona), the distinti (side stands) and the main stand. Regardless of the sector chosen, the easiest way to reach the Olimpico from our hotel in Turin city center is to drive along Corso Orbassano and Via Filadelfia: it takes just over ten minutes to reach the stadium. The adjacent areas are served by paid parking. Alternatively, you can park in Piazza Caio Mario by paying the relevant ticket and then use tram line 4 to reach the stadium.

The Olimpico can also be reached by bus or train. The stadium is connected to the city center by tram line 4 from Piazza Castello (trains and metro) and from Porta Nuova Station. Tram n°10 connects the stadium to the Vinzaglio metro stop and Porta Susa station. Buses n°14, 17 and 63 stop at the stadium. Those arriving by train at Lingotto, Porta Nuova or Porta Susa can use one of the listed trams or buses.

The Olimpico, despite being slightly south of the urban layout (just look at a city map) is easily accessible from any neighborhood. Those who are taking a walk in Valentino Park (where the Medieval Village of Turin is located) or are conducting a visit to the Automobile Museum in Turin can easily head to the Torino FC stadium in a short time and take a look at its sports architecture.

The history of the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino

Built in 1993 for the Littorial Youth Games and International Student Championships, the stadium was named after Benito Mussolini who expressly requested its construction. It was initially a sports citadel celebrating the invention of leisure typical of the Fascist twenty-year period. After its inauguration, it hosted some matches of the 1934 Italian World Cup and became the official stadium of Juventus (today based at Allianz Juventus Stadium). The Torino of that time, in fact, played at Filadelfia, another sports structure in the city.

With the end of the Second World War and the fall of the regime, the Mussolini stadium was transformed into Comunale and in 1963 it also became the official stadium of Torino in sharing with Juventus, until the Bianconeri and Granata moved to Delle Alpi, built for the 1990 World Cup. The period of abandonment of the Comunale began, lasting until 2002 when, for the upcoming 2006 Winter Olympics, it was renovated and used again for Toro's home matches.

From 2012 to 2015 it hosted the Sports Museum, the first of its kind in Italy: an exhibition that collected relics and memorabilia of champions of every sport. Despite the rich collection, the museum was not very successful and the low number of visitors led to its closure in 2015.

The present of the Olimpico:  Serie A and musical events

The greatest opportunity to experience the emotions linked to Turin's Olimpico is to attend a home match of the Granata in Curva Maratona: a historic reference point for Torino fans. In recent seasons, President Cairo's team has been consistently in Serie A with alternating fortunes, but the vibrant atmosphere and the memory of the legend are still alive in the stands: just look at the images of the Granata's big matches. Obviously, if your favorite team is another, the advice is, perhaps obvious, to buy an online ticket for the away sector, whose entrance is on Via Filadelfia, with a special and separate access from the rest of the public.

But the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino is not only linked to sport. Events and concerts are at home at Toro's stadium. After all, already in the 80s, before the opening of the new stadium, when even Agnelli's Juventus played at the Comunale, the structure hosted international artists such as Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and Madonna. Just stay updated on the main national music portals to find out which ones will be held next at Turin's Olimpico.

In short, whether it's sporthistory or musical events, Turin offers visitors a number of high-quality alternatives throughout the year. Book a stay in the city now at one of our B&B HOTELS in Turin and let yourself be inspired by the attractions of the Piedmontese capital: one of the most interesting and dynamic centers in all of Italy.
