Poised between mountain and sea, Toulon nevertheless has its sights firmly set on the water. It has been a port of call across the ages: for the Greek ships of antiquity, for countless merchant ships, for the fleet of Louis XIV after Vauban gifted the city with its imposing fortifications. The harbour has been visited convicts, explorers, and war. The Second World War took a heavy toll on Toulon. The port had to be rebuilt.
