Explore Saint-Quentin

Founded by the Romans, the city was first named after Augusta Viromanduorum. It was destroyed in the 3rd century. A new settlement appeared during the High Middle Ages: it grew around Quentin’s tomb, a Christian martyr who died in Augusta. The abbey named after him was first cited in 806. The city became royal domain at the start of the 8th century. Its ideal position between Champagne and Flanders helped its growth but also caused its decline: the city was well sought and was particularly affected by the Hundred Years War. At the end of the 16th century, the city began to specialise in the production of fine linens. It became a thriving industrial city in the 19th century, with successful and prosperous textile and mechanical industries.

Are you looking for ideas for walks? The Champs-Elysées and its 8 hectare grounds is the perfect place to relax. You can also walk around Winston Churchill Square, Isle Jacques-Braconnier Park and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach of the Etang d'Isle. The Marais d'Isle National Nature Reserve is home to a very rich fauna and flora.

Saint-Quentin is a stop on the Way of Saint James and has a magnificent art deco heritage. You can admire beautiful facades adorned with wrought iron, faience, sculptures and more. Among the must-see sights, you have Saint-Quentin Basilica, a former royal collegiate church, the town hall, built in a flamboyant Gothic style, the Musée Antoine-Lécuyer, which exhibits the work of Maurice Quentin de la Tour, the Butterfly Museum, home to a magnificent collection of more than 600,000 specimens, and the Village des Métiers d'Antan & Musée Motobecane.

Many events are organized throughout the year in Saint-Quentin, from the Cité-Jeune International Festival of Aisne (April) to the Foire de la Saint-Denis (October), and the traditional Fêtes du bouffon (during the weekend of Pentecost), as well as the many summer events (in summer, Saint-Quentin city centre is transformed into a sandy beach) or Salon du Livre book fair( (October).
