Founded in the 10th century, Paray-le-Monial was originally a small church built at the top of a hill. In the year 999, this base was absorbed into the properties of the Abbey of Cluny. In the 17th century, Christ appeared to Saint Marguerite-Marie Alacoque, a sister of the Visitation, and revealed to her his “heart burning with love for mankind”. From 1873, Paray-le-Monial became a place of pilgrimageand attracted tens of thousands of the faithful each year.
Looking to get out into nature? A bountifully be-flowered town, Paray-le-Monial includes numerous parks and gardens, which can provide a plethora of nature breaks at the heart of the town. During your stay, you can have a wander through the Emile Debroise garden, admire the rose collection in the Jardin Saint-Hugues, go for a walk in the Jardin des Bords de la Bourbince or savour a few minutes’ rest in the Jardin du Cloître, in the Parc de Verneuil or the Parc du Moulin Liron.
In addition to the famous Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, a masterpiece of Burgundy Romanesque art from the 12th century, the town features numerous exceptional monuments: the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Romay, the Saint Nicolas Tower, the Maison Jayet, a Renaissance-style mansion, the Chapel of the Visitation, and more... During your stay, you can visit the Maison de la Mosaïque Contemporaine and the Musée du Hiéron, which hosts the famous Via Vitae by Joseph Chaumet... The town possesses some of the most beautiful heritage sites in the region.
Numerous events are held throughout the year in Paray-le-Monial: concerts, painting and mosaic exhibitions, talks, theatrical performances, flea markets, and more...
