Discover the city of Montauban

In 1144, the Count of Toulouse, Alphonse Jourdain, founded the city of Montauban, one of the first "new cities" of the Southwest. The city experienced a big economic boom at the end of the 14th century. People would sell silk from Aleppo, fine draperies from Flanders, and all kinds of luxury goods, such as Alexandrine dates. The outbreaks of the plague which began in 1348 marked the beginning of a period of decline. Conceded to the English in the Treaty of Brétigny (1360), Montauban became French again in 1368. In the 16th century, Montauban became a leading intellectual hub and established itself as one of the main Protestant strongholds, alongside La Rochelle. After the Catholic reconquest, the city became central for administration, being home to several royal administrations. In terms of urban development, Montauban was built following a checkerboard plan that unfolds around a central square.

Need a moment to relax? Head to the Jardin des simples which recreates a traditional medieval garden with its squares of medicinal plants; the Cours Foucault, a garden overlooking the Tarn river or the Jardin des Plantes.

During your stay in Montauban, you can walk to the Place Nationale, which is the heart of the city, and admire the Pont Vieux bridge, built in the early 14th century. Lovers of religious art have to visit the Notre-Dame cathedral, which is home to magnificent furniture, and the Saint Jacques church, which has its original Toulouse style 13th century bell-tower. The former Jesuit college also deserves a visit. You can also plan a visit to the Ingres Museum, which contains interesting lapidary and archaeological collections.

Are you planning a trip to Montauban? Numerous events are held throughout the year: For example... Chante, an event dedicated to French music that takes place every year in May, the Montauban Jazz Festival (in July), theCultures du Monde Festival (in September), the Lettres d'automne Literary Festival (in November).
