History and Town Planning

Brive was built around a Roman bridge located on the crossroads between Poitiers/Cahors and Lyon/Bordeaux. Converted to Christianity in the fifth century, Brive became a canonical town around the year 1000 and further developed around the Saint-Martin College. In the twelfth century, the city began to spread outside of its walls. It was in the fourteenth century that it acquired its nickname, as part of the construction of a larger fortification. The extent of the work was such that it was given the nickname "gaillarde", or “forecastle” in English”. A Catholic city in a region that followed suit during the Reformation, Brive flourished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The arrival of the railway in 1860 brought along a new dynamic. The city turned to the harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables, preserves, liqueurs and jams. Very active in the Resistance, Brive was the first city of occupied France to become liberated by its own means, on August 15,1944.
