Cordialement,

Discovering and visiting Auxerre

The city developed thanks to its location at the intersection of several roads and waterways. It was at the end of the 3rd century, when facing raids by Germanic tribes, that the city of Auxerre retreated to higher ground. At the end of the 11th century, the counts of Auxerre had a new city wall built. The city continued to develop around grape growing and timber rafting. Seized by the Huguenots in 1567, Auxerre suffered significant damage. In the 19th century, the city loses its ramparts. Large infrastructure projects are completed in the following century. Today, the city is divided in to eleven districts.

From the gardens of the Abbey of Saint-Germain to the Promenades, by way of the Muséum’s garden with its French-style flowerbeds, the Arboretum Darnus-Rantheaume, the Parc de l’Arbre Sec and the plains of the Yonne river, Auxerre has many different nature walk choices.

Abbey of Saint-Germain, Saint-Étienne Cathedral, Saint-Eusèbe Church, chapels... The city has a rich religious heritage. In the city centre, you can admire the beautifully painted wood sculptures, the Clock Tower and the statue of Paul Bert. Art lovers can stop in at the Saint-Germain Museum, which house interesting prehistoric, Gallo-Roman and medieval collections, then head to the Leblanc-Duvernoy Museum, where they can see magnificent Beauvais tapestries and a collection of Puisaye stonewares.

And take note of these big days on the Auxerre calendar: Saint Vincent’s feast day with its parade of wine brotherhoods, on January 22; Fleurs de Vigne (“Vine Flowers”), which brings together a hundred of the regions winemakers every two years, in May; the Catalpa Festival, held in the summer, offering an expansive program of free concerts; and don’t forget the Christmas market, in December.
