Gänseliesel
Since 1901 the fountain sculpture can be found on the market place and is nowadays one of the landmarks of the city. The girl is the patron saint of the poor. According to the legend, it is said, that she had to work as a gooseherdess as she was born as an illegitimate child of a highly respected man who wished to remain anonymous. In the meantime the “Gänseliesel” likely belongs to the most kissed women in Göttingen, as it is a popular custom among the graduates of the University to kiss the figure after passing their doctoral examinations. Since 1990 visitors only see a replica at the market place, the original can be found in the Metropolitan Museum.
