The world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts visitors from the summertime. Visitors to the ancient sites have access to even more information than before. The symbol of Germany’s oldest town, the Porta Nigra, (“the Black Gate”), is a visitor area with model and viewpoints to show a new view of the Roman metropolis "Augusta Treverorum". The old building can be discovered through a self-guided tour app, which can be downloaded free of charge using a smartphone. An innovative multimedia installation shows how this Roman construction acted as a place of worship of saints in the Middle Ages.

The former Roman baths at the Cattle Market have been open to visitors since 1998. Here you can take an impressive look at the history of Trier! In the first century, the Romans built these large baths in their Augusta Treverorum imperial residence. The site later became a cemetery for the Jewish community. This gave Jüdemerstrasse Street its name. In the 19th and 20th centuries, a garden for the Capuchin monastery was created here. With the abolition of the monastery in 1802, the current cattle market was created as a market place.

Visit Karl Marx's birthplace at 10 Brückenstraße Street, on the edge of today's pedestrian zone. The permanent exhibition, "Karl Marx (1818-1883), Life - Work - Effect to the Present” presents Karl Marx as a historical person, the maturing of his philosophical and economic ideas, as well as their effects on the course of history and today. The front house of Karl Marx's birth house was built in 1727 and the facade was restored in 1930/31. The courtyard buildings date from the 19th century. Today the house serves as a museum and is managed by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

The amphitheatre stretches about 500 metres from the Imperial Baths. It was built in the year 100 CE and has a capacity of 20,000 spectators. It was proof that Trier was a rich city of a considerable size, since such a prestigious complex would only be built for such a city. However, the design of the Trier Arena differs from that of other grounds. Due to the particularly favourable location at the foot of Petrisberg Mountain, the Roman builders didn’t need to put anything down. They used the natural slope for the grandstands.

The Steipe Building takes its name from the Trier dialect, meaning "support". It was the representative house for city councillors and dignitaries, and had common rooms and drinking rooms. The Steipe at the main market, on the corner of Dietrichstrasse Street, was inaugurated in 1483 after 50 years of construction. It was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in 1970. It’s certainly one of the most important buildings in the main market. The sculptures show important figures of saints; the originals can be viewed in the Simeonstift City Museum.

In the midst of Trier’s city centre, stands Trier Cathedral, the oldest bishop's church in Germany. Today it’s set on a former Constantine palace complex, which was built in the early 4th century and where now stands the largest Christian church complex. It consisted of four basilicas, which were connected by a large baptismal font, and covered an area that reached today's main market. The remains of the first early Christian meeting place north of the Alps from the late 3rd century and the remains of the first basilica can be visited on a guided tour.

In the heart of the city, there’s a crowning garden architectural treasure: the palace garden. Baroque garden art, framed by pieces of art and history: an enchanting park in which the stone-carved past and the flourishing present can be experienced in equal measure. A part of the garden shows the style that we know from the ancient Greco-Roman gardens. Alongside classical literature and the fine arts, garden art also made its way over the Alps in the 16th century and found a new home in Germany. The uniqueness of Italian garden art is the strict stylistic development and the inherent richness, which all make every new creation an individual work of art.
