History and urban planning

There is evidence that the city has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. In 768, Montlhéry (then called ”Mons Aetricus”) was a modest hamlet found on the roman road that linked Paris and Orléans. The city is mentioned in a donation given by Pepin the Short at Saint-Denis Abbey. In 1465, Montlhéry was the stage of the battle between Louis XI and the League of the Public Weal. In the 16th century, the city became a castellany surrounded by walls. At the beginning of the 19th century, it’s tower, from which you can see for over 30 kilometres, was used by scientists. It was heavily hit during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. In 1924, an motor-racing track was opened in Monthléry which hosted various races between 1925 and 2004.

Walks in the area

Located in the Orge valley, Montlhéry has a lot of beautiful walking routes: during your stay, you can take a walk in the Parc de la Tourangelle, the Parc de la Tour and the Parc de la Souche.

Heritage

The city is home to a rich heritage and, in particular, a number of medieval remains. You can admire the Sainte-Trinité church, built in the 18th century, the 17th century Hôtel-Dieu, or the fortified castle, of which only the dungeon remains. You can also explore the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption chapel, built in the 18th century, the fortifications, the Hôtel de Ville, the Hôtel de Poste, and more.

Celebrations

Among the highlights on the calendar you have the unmissable tomato festival, which takes place on the second weekend of September every year. Every year, Montlhéry celebrates Carnaval with a huge parade of “charrettes “ (or carts), from which the nickname Carnaval de Charrettes has been derived. Lots of events take place throughout the year at the racing track.
