Visit Montélimar

Discover the history of Montélimar

The history of Montélimar began 5,000 years ago around the Gournier district.

Attached to the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC, "Acunum" benefited from its privileged location on the route connecting Lyon to Arles. The city then passed into the hands of great families, such as the Adhémar de Monteil. In 1449, Montélimar joined the Dauphiné. It was during the Wars of Religion that the citadel overlooking the city was built.

In the 19th century, Montélimar turned towards the production of nougat. In terms of urban planning, the city was built according to a classic Gallo-Roman city plan: it developed on either side of a north-south axis.

In spring, start the day with a coffee and a croissant on a terrace, then wander the streets to discover the typical charm of Montélimar. Not far away, in Sauzet, the Villa Sestier, also called Château Sestier, will surprise you with its Art Nouveau style. You can then have lunch in one of the city's restaurants that B&B HOTELS highly recommends you try.

From almond orchards to lavender fields, passing by cypress hedges, the region offers magnificent landscapes. For a relaxing break between two visits, head to the public garden! Nestled in the heart of the city, this park has a lake and a small historic bandstand.

Montélimar is home to an interesting heritage in every respect, such as the Porte Saint Martin. Similarly, the Château des Adhémar, built in the Romanesque style on the heights of the city, now houses a contemporary art center. You can also visit the Palais des Bonbons et du Nougat and the Maison des Jouets: a nostalgic visit that will delight those with a sweet tooth!

Montélimar and its surroundings

Nearby, you can stroll through the charming village of Alba-la-Romaine, at the foot of the Massif du Coiron, visit the Miniature Provençal Village, the Domaine Eyguebelle, or the Château de Grignan.

It is one of the highlights of the year: Montélimar Couleur Lavande offers a large market of lavender products (essential oils, honeys, syrups, sachets to scent linen, etc.), exhibitions, and more.

In July, it's time for the Montélimar Agglo Festival, which offers a great program of popular shows and concerts.

Every year in September, the city vibrates to the rhythm of the Festival De l'écrit à l'écran, a cinematic event that puts the spotlight on about twenty films and offers a look behind the scenes. In October, the city organizes its Cafés Littéraires, which are an opportunity to bring together various novelists and readers. At Christmas, a large market takes over the streets, offering a significant number of local products.
