History and urbanism

You might not know this, but Marseille is the oldest city in France! Christened Massalia, the city was already a major port in Roman times. Ravaged by a succession of wars, it is now a blend of past and present that is easy to visit thanks to its modern tram system. You’ll find a city that is built around La Canebière (a famous street) with many village-like little districts. Not to mention the la Joliette, which is now a thriving business district !

Stroll

Lazing on the Prado beaches, eating bouillabaisse (spicy fish stew) in the Old Port, a stroll along the shops on La Canebière, a football match at the Stade Vélodrome, a walk on the corniche or through the Estaque district… When you stay in Marseille, there’s no end of ideas for things to do! How about extending your family weekend out to the legendary calanques (high, rocky creeks) or the île d’If ?

Heritage

Are you keen to explore Marseille’s heritage ? Head for the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica and its statue of La Bonne Mère (literally 'Good Mother', or Virgin Mary). The Saint-Victor monastery, the Château du Frioul and the Santon Museum are all worth a visit, even if you are coming to Marseille for business tourism

Festivities

Comparing diaries, Marseille is right up there with the French capital! There are events every day, but if you only note down three, make it these: the International Contemporary Music Festival (April), the Monte-Cristo Challenge (June) and the Marsatac Festival (September). Also not to be missed: the Christmas period, when the traditional santons (figurines) adorn all the churches in Marseille. Don’t forget that Marseille was elected European Capital of Culture in 2013 !
