History and urbanism

A City of Art and History, Lille was already an important city in the Middle Ages, but it was during Napoleon III's time in the 19th century that it boomed to become a rich clothing manufacturing city. You can see this historical expansion in all the public buildings that freely mix Roman, Gothic and Classical art. Not forgetting the Vauban citadel, a fine example of 17th century military architecture which protected the city for many years.
But do you know what makes it unusual? Unlike other mediaeval towns built around a centre, it is made up of a mosaic of little districts, such as Old Lille or the Béthune faubourg.

Stroll

A stroll through historic Old Lille, nibbling p’tits quinquins sweetmeats in the Lille sweetshops, a boat trip on the Deûle, a break in the Vauban garden or window shopping in the Euralille mall…. There’s no shortage of things to do whether you come on a family weekend or as a business tourist

Heritage

Tales from 1000 years of history are told in this ancient city through more than 100 buildings, monuments and spaces. From the bell tower to the Vauban Fort, the Old Stock Exchange to the Coilliot Mansion or the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille you will discover some real gems when you stay in Lille.

Festivities

You can’t talk about Lille without mentioning its famous 'Braderie' or flea market. Attention all bargain hunters: Europe’s largest flea market takes place every September. The Clef Soleil world music festival is also one of the major highlights in this northern French city.
