History and urbanism
La Roche-sur-Yon is a new city, founded in 1804 by Napoleon in a neo-classical style. Entirely designed by the “Ponts et Chaussées” Highways Engineers based on pentagon-shaped plans, the city is a reflection of the Emperor’s vision. Each district has its own identity. The public buildings are arranged around a vast central esplanade, the Place Napoléon.
A stroll along the River Yon, hiking in the La Chaize Forest, walking or water sports at the lake at Moulin Papon, a turn around the fragrant grounds of the Georges Mazurelle hospital, a relaxing break in the parks at Les Oudairies, Alluchon or Rivoli... The area boasts many beautiful walking routes.
La Roche-sur-Yon is home to a rich heritage, including the Maison Gueffier, built in 1807, the Maison Renaissance, which is the oldest civilian building in the area, the extraordinary animals in the Place Napoléon, the Vendée stud farm, the Church of Saint-Louis, (the largest religious building in the Vendée) and the Italian-style theatre. During your stay, you can visit the Municipal Art Gallery, home to fascinating collections of paintings and graphic art, and feel your mouth watering at the sumptuous Museum of Chocolate.
La Roche-sur-Yon stages many events throughout the year: Colors, the Festival for dance of every kind, in May; the Café de l'été offering free concerts throughout the summer; Météores, a multicultural festival at the beginning of autumn, and the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival in October...
