History and urbanism

The city’s reputation is well known, basking in its rich history. And with good reason: in the Middle Ages, the City of Popes was the capital of Christian Europe and home to no fewer than seven Pontiffs! This extraordinary destiny left an enduring mark on Avignon’s architecture, notably the city walls and the magnificent palace. But Avignon is also a city looking to the future. Today the train station and many businesses extend beyond its historical centre.

Stroll

A stroll along the banks of the Rhône, a culture-filled walk in the historical centre, wandering through the picturesque quartier des Teinturiers or shopping on Rue de la République… There’s no shortage of ideas for a little walk in the City of Popes! After a day on foot, those here for business tourism or on a weekend break with the family will be thrilled to relax in our hotels !

Heritage

Did you know that there are no fewer than six Unesco World Heritage sites here? Among them is the famous Popes’ Palace, the largest Gothic palace in the world! But don’t forget to explore the city walls, the Doms garden, the four cathedrals and the Hôtel de la Monnaie (former mint). These are all unmissable sites for tourists! You can even go and sing and dance on the Saint-Bénezet bridge, made famous in the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon” !

Festivities

You can’t talk about Avignon without mentioning its famous festival! Famed worldwide, it welcomes over 800 theatre companies to the heart of the city. Another important event is the "ban des vendanges" in September, signalling the start of the grape harvest and many festivities – the perfect excuse to indulge !
