Where to book in Rennes?
History and urbanism
Founded in the 1st century BC, Rennes built a first ring of protective fortifications around the end of the 3rd century, supplemented in the 15th century by two additional walls. The houses were mainly of half-timbered constructions until the great fire that ravaged the city in 1720. The city took advantage of its reconstruction to modernise and swapped wood for stone.
Classified as a “Town and Region of Art and History”, simply wander through the streets of Rennes to encounter its rich civil and religious history. There are plenty of churches and markets in the city centre, often now home to businesses and art galleries. After a day exploring, you’ll be glad to rest your head on a comfy pillow.
Whether in Rennes for a family weekend or business tourism, there is always something to see. For an exhibition, head for the Musée des Beaux-arts, the La Criée contemporary art centre or the main Palais des Musées museum building. For a feel of Rennes’ heritage, stroll from the impressive city hall to the market halls of Les Lices, the Grand Séminaire that now houses the economics faculty and Saint-Georges Palace, not forgetting the former Breton Parliament, the Duchesne Tower and the Porte Mordelaise historic city gateway.
A night at the Opera, a play at the National Theatre of Brittany, a concert during the legendary or a street-arts festival like Les Tombées de la Nuit - or what about Stunfest (arcade and retro-gaming)… You’ll be spoilt for choice for your stay in Rennes, a town which never says no to a good party !
